I automatically assume if they use smiley faces its a girl. The only man I know who does is 55 and looks like Santa.
Like I said, it’s likely societal. All my peers do it, and admitedly, my peers are more internet savy and lean towards beeing geeky or at least very immersed in pop-culture (not to mention grew up watching anime) so I think that factors into it a lot.
